Lordy, I've been knitting this thing since Memorial Day. Finally!

My friend Jen kindly modelled it for me, even though it's a little big for her. Still needs blocking. Love the Yarn Lounge button that Stewart helped me pick. Nice finishing touch.

Before the last four days of rain, I took some pics of the dogs in the dead grass in the dusty back yard. Look at Kiwi's figure...Cate, do you think she might be part whippet??

Virginia Beach Conference

The last few days I've been in Virginia Beach for a work conference. I stayed at the Old Cavalier Hotel.
It was built about 80 years ago. They also call it the Cavalier on the Hill. Pretty, huh? There is also a New Cavalier Hotel, which is across the street. Not nearly as pretty, huh?
My old hotel room had many of the original amenities. Including hot and cold water coming out of seperate faucets. Reminded me of an old Fan apartment.
I'm not sure what all those knobs are in the bathroom. Also, this was a strange place for the TP roller...b/c it got wet when I took a shower.

The benefit of the New Cavalier is the view from the hotel....

I am not a beach bum, so I didn't spend any time out on the beach...but it looked nice.
I started out the month right by taking advantage of Get Your Knits on Rt. 64. I went to Ewe Knit Kits and Yarn with my tote bag and did some serious damage. The new yarn will be posted on Ravelry.

As you can see, Ewe Knits has lots of nice ladies.
And plenty of yarn.

New chair, part of a sweater, and a life saved

My friend Barry no longer had need for this chair, so I took it off his hands for a BARGAIN! I know you are thinking...boy, that chair looks comfortable. And you know what? IT IS!!!

Meanwhile, my A Line Jacket is coming along slowly but surely. The color looks bad here...but awesome in real life. I'll upload this image to Ravelry.

The big drama of last week is that Ginnie Lee almost caught this little girl and ended up chasing her up a tree.

I couldn't figure out which of these two pics were cuter, so I posted both of them.
I took the baby to work and one of the law student interns was kind enough to take her home.
Those are Sherando's eyelashes in that pic. She just came to visit for a cuddle.

Tammy the intern named this little girl Cleo. We took her over to Banfield at Petsmart on Midlo and she is negative for all those nasty feline viruses but had a wicked case of earmites. No matter...those are easy to treat.

Thanks, Tammy, for giving little Cleo a new home.

A Good Visit

My friends Eric Miller and Ruoxia Li came to visit this week! They had a conference here in Richmond and stayed over a few days to visit with me.

Eric and I went to University of Pittsburgh together. I was in law school there and Eric was getting his doctorate in Anthropology. After he defended his dissertation, he moved to China where he met Ruoxia. They have relocated to Iowa for now...but are talking about returning to China. I'm so glad we were able to visit!
Lucky for us, we have lovely Maymont Park here in Richmond. Thanks to Melanie for the suggestion.
We popped by the Old Chesterfield County complex where Ruoxia and I tried to put Eric in the stocks.

We also went by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. I think most of the exhibits are in hiding right now due to all the renovations, but we saw a few things, including the Faberge collections, which was nice.

Of course, I was most interested in sheep.........and dogs.

In yarn news:

Cate and I met local (Chesterfield) sheep farmer and fiber artist Kim Harrison at the Sedalia Fiber Festival. Cate grabbed up the wool at the festival, but since Kim was so close, she brought me some a few weeks later:

This is the natural color of the wool and the pic doesn't do it a bit of justice.

Kim was sweet enough to provide a sample of her new color--also the natural color of this yarn. I feel a purchase in my future.

My cousin Ben has been in town from the UK for the last two weeks. He's headed out tomorrow. I only get to see him about once a decade, so it's been nice to visit.

Oh look....another red sweater from yet another KP & S pattern.
This is the very beginning of the Split Neck T in Noro Cash Iroha. It's absolutely gorgeous yarn...so soft! There was an article in the Fall 2007 Vogue Knitting by Lily Chin about garment construction based on body type. Apparently all these raglan sleeve sweaters I'm making are just making my pear shaped body look even more pear shaped. Pity.....I'm so addicted to them. it appears I should be making yoked cardigans with a pattern of some type around the yoke...so as to draw the eye away from my fat ass. Perhaps I will try a little something from Knitting Nature next.

Ginnie Lee went to the vet today. Since Dr. Rose is cutting back his hours in favor of a more retired lifestyle, GL saw handsome Dr. Hiser today. Dr. Hiser opines that GL might have food allergies. He thinks that I should try a hypoallergenic diet for two months. But, he also found yeast in GL's ears...and we all know how itchy yeast can be. So GL is being treated for yeast in her ears and we're going to keep an eye on her itchiness.
All the poking and prodding wore GL out.

She only goes into her crate when she needs alone time. I never bother her there.

You can see on her back paw that she has a little ouchie that's been a reoccurring problem for a nearly a year. Dr. Rose and I have decided to remove it once and for all. GL's allergies seem to be getting a little better. We don't know if it was the food change or the season change. I hope they keep getting better.

Poor Ginnie Lee. She's not feeling well. She's allergic to something and Dr. Rose and I are trying to figure out what it is.

She's so itchy she's scratching her herself bald. She's also got hives on her tummy.

It might be her food. It might be grass or weeds or anything! We just have to try to figure it out.

She has to take benadryl every day now, and this is how it makes her feel.

Everyone wish her all better soon.

The Insomnia Chronicles--Part Seven

I got started on this:
Which is the Forest Canopy Shoulder Shawl by Susan Pierce Lawrence. Great pattern. I have made attempts at lace before with skinny yarn and skinny needles, and thrown it all down in disgust. This pattern is for worsted, so I don't feel like I'm going blind and arthritic. I totally went stash diving for the yarn on this one, too....which was highly satisfying since this Shaefter Marjaana has been sitting around so long, the Indira Gandhi colorway doesn't even exist anymore (that I can find, anyway). Pretty, huh? This is just the cast on and set up rows, so we'll see how I do on the lace pattern.

The ever faithful Ginnie Lee gets up when I get up at 3 a.m. and goes outside to go potty, then takes her place on her "Ginny Lee" (totally spelled wrong) bed next to the couch. And when I go upstairs to get back into bed, she will uncurl herself and make the long climb with me again.

Shocking news: An FO! It's the Easy Baby Cardi from Knitting Pure and Simple...you all know what a devotee I am...

It's made from 2.5 of the eleventy million balls of Sugar 'n' Creme I have. It still needs to be blocked and I need to put some closures on it.

I think my next project is going to be the Forest Canopy Shawl which I can easily stash dive for. It will be my first lace project, but it's made for beginners and it's written for worsted weight.

National Night Out

Last night was National Night Out. I got so busy I forgot to post about it before hand. Anyway, I hope that everyone was able to get out and enjoy some time in their communities. As with last year, I spent my evening taking pics of the doggies I saw while out. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised to see my knitting pal and Yarn Lounge regular, LISA!Hi Lisa! So good to see you! My friend Jenna is having a baby and her shower is on September 2nd. I'm doing this KP & S freebie baby cardi pattern out of Sugar 'n' Cream that I bought on sale for 99 cents. This is my new favorite yarn to make baby stuff out of. It's inexpensive, washable and dryable, and comes in a good array of colors.

Obviously this is a super quick knit since I just started it yesterday and have made so much progress already.

Once again, I can't say enough good things about these K P & S patterns.

..... I've decided to make washcloths for the paralegals/staff at the office this year for the winter holiday (take your pick, none of them apply to me) this year. And with each face cloth, I will give a bar of Robin's handmade soap. This is an effort to both save money and use up some yarn lying around so I have room for more yarn that I will SURELY purchase this fall when the new yarn comes into the Yarn Lounge (let's be realistic, ok?). I have quite a bit of the Sugar N Creme cotton lying around from this project or that, so I figure this is a good gift that won't require me to spend too much money, and if they don't appreciate it, then I won't have spent a ton of time on the washcloths. So, that's my plan.

In furtherance of my plan to spend less money and to make these washcloths, I've been trying to curb my eating out (especially at lunch time) to 1 day a week. It's hard to eat at your desk, thereby spending the whole day in the office. So, I've been eating my lunch at my desk rather quickly and then going over to the garden behind the John Marshall House.
Apparently, I am currently sitting where the man's law office used to be. Pretty cool when you think about it.

Anyway, since he has some v. nice gardens behind his house, with some lovely shade and flowers and BENCHES, I've been going over there at lunch and trying to get at least one pattern repeat done every day. I hope I can get enough clothes done by Christmas.

....not right away at least. I pulled out what I had knitted of the Jo Sharp sweater, and reswatched the yarn on 1s. The 1s definitely give me a more accurate gauge, but I just don't have the mental energy to knit a whole top with them right now. I think I might feel better about it if I could figure out a way to convert the pattern (at least the body) into working in the round.

In the mean time, I might go see if I have something that can be worked up on 13s or something....or at least 9s. So, I can have an FO before next July.

In other news, Hershey is not feeling his best today. He hurt his leg or something and had to go see handsome Dr. Hiser at Broad Street Vet yesterday. Elizabeth and I didn't mind seeing Dr. Hiser at all yesterday, b/c he is pure eye candy (plus a good vet and a v. nice person), but Hershey doesn't like going to the vet at all. Hershey is on some anti inflammatories and seems to be perking up a bit, but he's still having trouble going up and down the stairs.

Stash Management and WIP disappointment

Bryna sent me this link to Mochi Mochi blog the other day.... It's...it's .... the mother of all stashes. I've never seen anything like it. I am in awe.

In the interest of full disclosure, here is my own yarn room. Not even 1/10th of Mochi's mother in law...

As you can see, I have 5 clear drawer bins of yarn. (Can you see the blue and pink classic elite in the top drawers??)

And then I have a couple totes sitting around with yarn in them....

But that's it, I swear.....

Well, the short sleeve top I have been knitting out of the Cotton Glace is coming out too big. I did a gauge swatch and got a gauge of 24 stitches to 4 inches on size 2s. The pattern calls for 25 to 10 cm. I thought that 10cm and 4 inches were the same....but after finding that I was 6 cm to big on the back of my sweater, I looked closely at the tape measure and 10cm is actually about 1/8 inch shorter than 4 inches...thus the huge difference in my gauge. Anyhooooo.....I am swatching now with size 1s and getting a much closer gauge. The question is this....can I knit a whole sweater in size 1s????

Temporary addition, FO, and WIP

This summer, GL and I are honored to have Elizabeth and Hershey staying with us. Elizabeth is a rising 3L at Washington and Lee University Law School. Hershey is her canine companion.

Out of Lion Brand Cotton Ease
Color....blue? I think it's a bit more purple in real life.

The Cotton Ease is a decent yarn for the price, but this sweater is pretty heavy. Also, I made a size too big. I should have paid attention to the shape of the garment and focused more on the waist measurement rather than the bust measurement. Oh well, I guess it will be my kinda baggy, cropped blue sweater.

My current WIP is a short sleeve crew neck sweater out of Jo Sharp Knit 2. It's out of Rowan Cotton Glace in a bright pink color.

At first I didn't like the Cotton Glace, but once I switched to Addi Turbos, I absolutely love it! I'm curious to see how much stretching it does once I'm done....you know, sometime in 2008.

Ok, GL....I'll post a picture of you sleeping, too.

TNK--report a little late

Tuesday night, Susan and I took the long drive out to the Hugenot Rd. Barnes and Noble and met up with the TNK group. Before we went to knit, we stopped for a quick bite at the new Mexico restaurant off Forest Hill Ave. The food was really good (v. spicy salsa!) Apparently, on Tuesday nights between 6 and 8, a funny man comes to the restaurant to entertain the kids. There were only a few kids there when we went so he made me a penguin out of balloons.

Pretty talented, huh?
I can't decide what Mr. Penguin's name should be, so I think I'll have a contest. The best penguin name gets a skein of natural fiber yarn.
The penguin came with us to TNK and cheered everyone up. Here are Tammy and Debbie:

We were so busy chatting and having a good time, that I didn't have a lot of pictures. I should have taken pictures of the handmade soap that Robin brought. She makes the best smelling handmade soaps and body treatments. Mmmm mmmm. I am still trying to decide which fragrance is best for me...but in the mean time, my bathroom smells great from giving them a try.

I took a picture of this beagle in front of PetsMart the other day and now I can't remember her name. She's cute, though, huh?

My friend Kelli was out of town this weekend. So, GL and I went over a couple times to keep Daisy company and give her some distraction. GL and Daisy have an interesting relationship.
Here, you can see they are playing in a friendly manner...a little banter, a little bouncing, a little pawing, a little nipping....

However....
Here is appears that Daisy has been possessed by the devil and is trying to tear GL's ear off. Don't be fooled. GL is not the innocent party here. She goes low and tries to grab Daisy's ankles to take her out from underneath, and then goes in for the kill....that's why Daisy is on the floor here ...

Interestingly, much of th chaos is caused by this object:Daisy's all time dream toy it seems. I probably would have been wise to take it away from them...but quite frankly...the whole encounter was damn riot.

We're back in business! Ben...awesome fellow that he is...got my internet cable fixed and I am back to having internet! In honor of the favors that Ben and Susan have done me over the last week, this is going to be the Ben and Susan Rector appreciation post.

Ginnie Lee really likes men...she is quite flirty with Ben, too. I always think that you can tell the character of a person by the way that person is with animals. Ginnie Lee took quite a shine to Ben when she first met him and here she demanding attention from him.

As I posted previously, Susan was awesome enough to pick up GL when I was late on Saturday. I got her some Misti Alpaca Chunky while I was in NoVA.

I think she likes it? What do you think?

All sorts of trouble

Well, Blogger is having its photo problems again...I still don't have internet at the apartments, and it's been a heck of a morning personally and professionally. I won't get into all that, though.

Went to Tuesday Night Knitting group last night at Southside B & N. Susan and I went and had a great time. I hope I get to post pics of the evening soon. I'll try again later in the day. I'm on my lunch break now.

Technical difficulties

Apparently, there's a mouse in the carriage house. This might be some of the explanation for Ginnie Lee's late night agitations. However, last night, Mr. Mouse bravely made himself aware and visible to both GL and I around 9 p.m. What ensued thereafter was a mad chase around the carriage house and a wild howling hound dog trying to make herself go into every corner that Mr. Mouse went into. Unfortunately, since I live in such a small place, there's a lot of my stuff jammed into every corner of my place.

Also, quite unfortunately, GL got her paw caught up in the ethernet cord to my computer and managed to pull out the wiring from the wall. Here is the problem:
Obviously, all those little wires need to get back into that little plastic box. I'm not sure what the next course of action is... Perhaps some of you tech savvy people can suggest a plan...anyone? anyone?

Also, unforunately, I had already downloaded to my laptop all my pics from yesterday, including the finished Dad's sweater and a picture of how happy Susan was with her Misti Alpaca. I am going to have to find a place with Wifi and get those pics uploaded to show you....b/c some of them are really great!

I figured since I spent so much time on my father's sweater, that I really should do something that I can finish rather quickly just so I feel like I'm accomplishing more than 2 FOs a year. Here is the baby sweater I started yesterday.

Obviously, it's going to knit up v. quickly since I got the back and so much of the front done already. I don't know if you can see it, but that's a cable starting up the front. It should be pretty cute.

My mean, ugly rear neighbor is causing anxiety for me again by yelling at my poor Ginnie Lee. Here she is on squirrel patrol.

Ginnie Lee and I are looking forward to the weather cooling a bit so that we can go for some hikes in the woods at Pocahontas. That really uses up some energy! All the good smells!Anyone care to join us??

Road Rage

I finally finished my father's sweater. I will post a pic later. It is large enough that it doesn't really fit on any surface in my apartment. I might have to get someone to model it. I'm pretty pleased with it, though it still needs to be blocked...and I'm hoping that blocking it will work out some of the imperfections in it....like a little bunching around the collar. I'll ask Cate...she is wise about such things.

So, yesterday I went up to NoVA to visit with my friend Gwen and go on a NoVA yarn crawl. Unfortunately, as so often is the case when travelling up there, I got stuck in traffic. The traffic on the way up was bad and slow, but managable. So, even though I left around 8:30 (stopping briefly for breakfast), I didn't get to Gwen's until about 12:30.

I had to be back in Richmond by 6p.m. to pick up Ginnie Lee from Pets at Play, so I knew I had to be back on the road about 3:30 in order to make sure I was back home in time. You do the math! This left only 3 hours for yarn shopping! But first things first, we had to have a delicious brunch of waffles and bacon made my Gwen!
Here's Tia:

Tia is a Husky and German Shepherd mix. Isn't she a good girl. Look how nicely she posed for the camera! Tia is 11 years old and she is a cancer survivor! Yay Tia!!! She's healthy and strong now! And she knows how to pay dead! She got a little bacon for doing that trick!

We took Gwen's new Cooper Mini! It's as cute as Gwen is! It was fun riding around in the Mini!

Our first stop was Knit Happens in Alexandria. They have a v. pretty storefront, as you can see:

And they had a v. bright and cheerful store. There were tons of people in there too! They were having a pretty good sale! And they're having an even bigger one next week! I bet Gwen goes back! I didn't find anything I couldn't live without, though. There were a few pattern books that I really liked, but nothing I found compelling.

Our next stop was Springwater Fiber Workshop. This is a non-profit studio for the fiber arts!! Yay!!

I bought some Misit Alpaca at Springwater Fiber. It is so soft! But I'm not keeping the Misti Alpaca! More on that later!

And that was all we got to do. How rotten. There were at least two other shops on our list, but we didn't have time! I got back on the road around 3:30...but lo and behold....95S suffered paralyzing delays! Poor Gwen...she had to navigate via phone so I could find a way to US 1. But US 1 was a parking lot too! So another friend had to come to the rescue...of not me, but my little furry baby! Susan, superstar that she is, went and picked up Ginnie Lee from daycare before they closed and GL had to spend the night! Because Susan went out of her way and is such a good friend, I'm giving her the Misti Alpaca...because she's going to love it! Susan loves soft yarn, and this is the softest I've ever touched!

Last night I was too tired to blog, but I started on my next project which is the Garter Stitch Edged Cardigan in Knitter's Stash. It calls for Classic Elite Montera, which I just happened to have in my stash! I really like this yarn and am hoping that Stewart might consider carrying it.

Short term memory loss

I forgot to take my camera to TYL tonight to snap some pics of the last of this Beyond the Basics session. My class was really fantastic this time around...they are going to be great knitters. I'm sorry I can't show them off one more time. They picked up so fast on cables and double knitting that we finished 15 minutes early...

....which unfortuately left 15 for me to browse. Sigh. I think I'm having a little depression b/c it's been so long since I've bought yarn (a whole week!). That might be the cause of some of my malaise the last few days.

There are tons of beautiful things in the shop now for fall. Some organic wool and some cruelty free wool that I MUST have. Of course...never mind the yarn I have for 14 other sweaters already. Good grief.

Will finish up my father's sweater tomorrow evening and post the pics. I'm glad to have this finishing up. What should be my next endeavor???

Malady

Well, I've been a bit under the weather the last few days so I have not 1) gone to work or 2) done much blogging. Nothing particularly interesting to blog about except my sinus headache and monsterous cold sore (I'll spare you the details).

I can't believe how gorgeous it's been outside the last few days and I've really been feeing too fatigued to go out and play in it.

Between naps yesterday, I got quite a bit done on my dad's sweater, and did some more today. All that's left is to finish the last bit of the sleeve and then I'll be all done...far ahead of my Saturday deadline. I'm not going to post a pic until it's all done, though.

Meanwhile, after being home a couple days, I think I'm starting understand why GL is not sleeping through the night...she sleeps all day! I woke her up several times yesterday trying to get her to go out and play during the day, but she seemed much more interested in sleeping. This doesn't account for why she doesn't sleep through the night on doggie day care days...when she's supposed to be playing all day.

I think she's bored with her life....

In a desperate attempt to further consolidate and organize my stash, I purchased this mini tower with 3 drawers to hold some yarn. I should have just admitted defeat and gotten another 6 drawer tower...oh well. This helps a little. Still, not enough to claim victory over the yarn explosion in in here.

I'm somewhat on schedule on my father's sweater. I finished the left sleeve this weekend and have started working on the right. Hope to get another few inches done on it tonight. I am worried that I am not going to get this done before Saturday a.m. I haven't pulled an all nighter since college!

Ginnie Lee and I went for an evening walk, as always. The weather is deceptive. Feels rather pleasant while you're roaming about in it, but it starts feeling pretty sticky when you're on an hour walk.

Here she is chillin' on the bed after her walk. It's 8:30 and she's asleep on her bed now...I can only hope that she makes it through the night...

I've been feeling a little under the weather these days, hence the sporadic posts.... Plus, nothing much interesting going on except this sleeve. Yawn.

A New Hope...

Ryan came up with an excellent plan to help me curve my yarn buying habits. He called for an intervention today. He made the point that I am merely turning into a yarn collector at this point...and that's not what I want to be! I want to be a knitter! So, the plan is only to buy yarn when I finish a project. A reward for completion, as it were.

So...I have a challenge that lies ahead of me....I am going to NoVA to visit with Gwen next Saturday, the 19th. I would like to buy a little something special from my trip to NoVA since we're going to visit several yarn shops (of course)...so I am challenged to finish my father's sweater before then. CAN I DO IT?!?!? I am almost done with the left sleeve. If I finish that sleeve tonight and work on the other sleeve all week, I THINK I CAN DO IT!!!

Of course, then there's the matter of the VA Fall Fiber Festival....

The sleeve of my father's sweater has progressed enough to move down to double pointed needles, which is good.

I have had barely a minute to knit the last few days so I've made poor progress. Tonight is the second Beyond the Basics class, so I probably won't have much time today either, but hopefully can get about an hour in before class starts.

I bought this on super sale last year. The scrap of paper inside the bag says "Whole Ball of Elaine." It appears to be some sort of wool/synthetic blend. Very soft and pretty colorway. Don't have a clue about gauge or yardage or what the heck to make with it....

Ginnie Lee is still not sleeping through the night and I'm not really sure what to do about it. But here she is...looking cute as ever.

Last night I finally got sick of seeing the yarn piled up all over my floor...

And it made me a little industrious. So, I took a late evening drive to Kmart where I found a practical, but not terribly attractive yarn keeping device which I was sure was going to hold the yarn that was scattered on the floor in various bags and then I would have the wicker chest and the ugly plastic bins as yarn storage.

However, this thing..with it's six drawer...barely held 1/3 of the stash that I have managed to accumulate. At the end of the evening...not much could be seen in the way of improvement:

There are still bags and boxes of yarn everywhere.

Roz came by and said I needed 17 of the ugly plastic bins. I beg to differ. I am quite sure that 2 more will be more than adequate.

Ginnie Lee and I worked at The Yarn Lounge all day today. GL always makes the customers smile because she is so sweet and pretty, but this young lady and GL really hit it off:

They spent a lot of time getting to know each other and it was really sweet.

Mel's hubby, Mike, came by and he is such a supermodel that he modelled my father's sweater. I really needed to see it on a man's body and after Mike tried it on, it was clear to me that it's a good sweater and it's going to fit Daddy just fine.

Yarn Lounge Saturday

Stew wanted to take a weekend off, so she asked me to pitch in at the shop. I said, Sure! So Mel and I spent the day together at TYL and Roz was there all day too! Roz is so close to finishing her red blanket, that I have decided not to post any progress pics of it and just have one big unveiling at the end.

It was oddly slow for much of the day today, as you can tell....

I made a pyramid of yarn with the NEW Wildfoote sock yarn in all these magnificent colors!! Cate picked them...she has such an eye, doesn't she? There are at least 2 colorways I'm going to get for socks this winter. I am such a loose knitter, I would have to knit Wildfoote on a size 0 or below. Yikes!

FINALLY feel like I'm making some progress on Dad's sweater. The left sleeve is actually resembling something other than a nub.

The pic is taken outside on my landing, not in jail, as it may appear. It was nice and sunny out, so I thought I would take advantage of it.

GL spent the day at daycare. Apparently, it's done what it's supposed to do:

I, once again, can't upload any photos. How annoying. It was the first night of my new Beyond the Basics class and I have a GREAT class. I have a pic of them. Maybe I can get it up later.

Ginnie Lee has a play date with Daisy this evening. I have a pic of Daisy too. Hopefully I can get that up tomorrow.

I managed to go a day w/out buying more yarn...even though I spent the whole evening in the yarn shop. Shocking, I know. Try to contain your amazement.

Afterwards, I was naughty and met Mel, Mike and Roz for an ice cream cone at Bev's. I would like to tell you this is a decadent treat for me...but quite frankly, I eat ice cream all the time. I took a picture there, too...but I think Roz and Mel would be glad that it's not being posted.

I am working on the left sleeve of my father's sweater...but it's such a pathetic advancement, it's not worth photographing and sharing. I'll post it when I'm further along.

For national night out, I decide to take pics of the dogs who were out for crime prevention...they are, after all, such a great crime deterrent! Unforunately, only one venue was dog friendly, and that's when I got pics of these two cuties!

That's Lottie (or Lonnie) the fluffy dog and Max the Chihuahua. They braved the heat to show their support for their communities!

In knitting news, I am planning on making this sweater eventually:

In Debbie Bliss Cathay. The Cathay is 23 to 4 inches and the sweater is written for 20 to 4 inches, but I think I can make it work by making the next size larger. I decided to make the body in black, but couldn't decide on a contrast color until I stopped at the Knitting Basket yesterday over lunch to see what they had. Ta Da!

As if I needed more yarn. But this Blue Skye Alpacas Cotton is a great buy at 30% off. I think I will make some baby things out of it.

Gimme some Hot Stuff Baby...

Today is, I believe, the 21st day in a row that Richmond, VA has seen 90+ degree heat. Generally speaking, I'm not one to complain too much about the heat, since I prefer hot to cold....but somehow, the hot of my childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood is not the same hot I am experiencing now as a thirty-something. As much as I would like to chalk this up to global warming, I think the actual culprit is hormones. Some women start perimenopause in their 30s. I am not sure that this is full on perimenopause, but maybe it is peri-perimenopause...because I am finding the heat intolerable where I used to tolerate it easily. Not to mention that I am quite cranky on a regular basis these days and there are hairs growing out of my chin lately (sorry, Ryan, I know you hate talking about this stuff, but I'm all about open communication, as you know).
Tomorrow is going to be three digit temps here in Central Virginia. I am wondering what Weatherpixie is going to wear once it gets to 100. She's wearing a bikini now...wonder if she does pasties and a g-string in triple degree temps. Catharine has suggested that maybe she just melts.

So, I generally walk her an hour or an hour and a half each evening after work. I just checked the Weather Channel. It's 93 degrees out, but it feels like it's 100. I am hoping that once darkness falls, it might cool off enough for us to take a walk without either of us succumbing to heat stroke. Sheesh.

Ok, I really don't like to talk too much about work stuff, but I wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow night is National Night Out Against Crime. That means everyone should find out what their respective communities are doing and take part in the activities. It's important, and quite frankly, it should be kinda fun.

New Shoe Sunday!

There are a lot of knitters hanging out at TYL this Sunday. However, I am sitting in the back, chilling out of the comfy couch and working on the blog.

This morning I got up relatively early and had breakfast with Mini and Susan. Mini is my cousin. She just got home from a month in India, and she brought me a prezzie!
A new pair of sandals from India! I had to make this pic a little bigger than the rest b/c I wanted everyone to see at least some of the detail on the sandals. They are wonderful and I love them...thanks Mini!!

Susan is Mini's friend in Charlottesville (and she's my friend now, too!) and she drove Mini to Richmond when she left for India and came and got her today to take her back to Charlottesville. Wow! What a great friend!

Progress on my father's Christmas sweater is coming along at a snail's pace. I have just started the ribbing and have a few more inches of that to finish, which I hope to complete today...then I can start on the sleeves. Hope to make some good sleeve progress in the coming week.

Here's the daily pic of GL...I wish she watched me this intently all the time.GL has been having a hard time sleeping through the night these days. Usually, she goes to bed at 8:30 and sleeps all night, but lately she has been up at all hours whining and howling and staring intently out the window. I don't know what is out there, but I wish it would go away and leave my dog alone. GL probably needs another few hours of exercise a day, but I have maxxing out at an hour long walk these days. Look at weather pixie! She can tell you why!

A fond farewell

On Thursdays, I teach a Beyond the Basics class at TYL. My student for this session has been Megan. She has been a great student. Last night was our last class together. I hope she found it helpful...as I certainly enjoyed having her for a student. Megan's baby is due in October. Good luck, Megan!!

Thursdays are also teaching night for Cate. She only has one student this time, too...Carolina. Carolina made the CUTEST santa hat out of Handknit Holidays by Melanie Falik. It is such a great looking hat, I might have to make one for the upcoming Christmas season this year.
My own knitting has been conspicuously absent the last few posts. The truth is that I haven't made a lot of progress on it lately. It seems that while I'm knitting on my father's sweater...it's just getting shorter.

But it appears from comparison, it is actually getting ever so slightly longer....maybe this weekend I can get to work on the ribbing at the bottom and then contemplate the sleeves.

Since she killed the squeaker in her favorite squeaky toy, she got two new ones: Mr. Lion and Mr. Frog. Mr. Frog is quite clever because he has Velcro along his back that allows me to replace his squeaker should it ever get destroyed. Mr. Lion is hugely popular because he has legs made of rope that flail about when he's shaken.

Last night was knit night at The Yarn Lounge. It was a great turn out!

Autumn learned to cast on and she has started a purple ribbed scarf for her first project. She's doing great! YAY AUT!!

And look! My wish came true! Aren't they beautiful?? So fresh and delicious!

But they weren't the best part of the night! The best part of the night were these:

Aut MADE me two pair of earrings b/c I'm teaching her to knit. That's right! She MADE these fetching earrings herself! Aut is v. talented in all sorts of arts and crafts ways. I am wearing the ones on the right today! They go great with my suit!

Unexpected purchase

Yesterday was so busy, I couldn't post. So, I'm a little behind from the weekend.

First, Cate got a fetching new hair cut, and she looked just lovely:

I love the way she's got that little curl on her cheek. Cate has a great look.

Second, Daisy, who came to stay with us over 4th of July weekend was v. grateful for a place to stay other than the kennel, so Daisy's mom Kelli gave me a gift card to the Yarn Lounge. Of course, I had to spend it immediately! And what better to spend it on than a luxury that I would not normally buy for myself:

That's right! A skein of Mongolian cashmere! Woo hoo!

Third, I am teaching my friend Autumn how to knit, so we met at TYL on Saturday for her purling lesson.

She is doing so great, she is going to outknit me soon. Her work is beautiful.

Fourth, Saturday night Erik, Vince and I went to a baseball game. They were giving away chapstick with a mermaid/princess/barbie looking character on it. Quite manly and sportslike....

Here is Diamond Duck talking to the little girl who was sitting behind us. At some point in the evening, she hit me in the face with a green mini beanbag. It was an accident, I suppose....I wish I had gotten a picture of it.

Tonight is knit night at TYL. I MUST remember the camera. Should be a lot of fun. I hope Stew gets doughnut holes again. Those are the best.

A lot of stuff today b/c I might not be able to post again until Monday.

Of course, I forgot the camera last night, so there are no pics of class or the Yarn Lounge. Cate had her beautiful version of the Knitting Pure and Simple baby cardi. Her's was green and had lovely embellishments. Here's my version:

Not nearly as lovely as Cate's, but I'm still quite pleased with the outcome. I'm particularly pleased b/c the yarn is the Sugar 'n' Creme you get at Ben Franklin, et. al. that only costs $1.50 a ball...and it uses about 3.5 balls of yarn...what a bargain for a great sweater.

Can I just rave for a moment about the Knitting Pure and Simple patterns? These patterns are just wonderful...beautiful, uncomplicated and well written. I have many of them and plan on getting more soon.

In fact, here's another one...my father's Xmas present... The V-neck top down pullover for men from Knitting Pure and Simple:

Obviously, it's still a WIP. I feel as though I've been knitting the body now for 100 years and it's never going to get to the required 25 inches before I can start the ribbing and finish that portion. Of course...then I have to get to the sleeves. I'm so glad I started early...

I tried to make some more baby gifts. These booties have a glaring error....anyone care to guess what it might be???

Of course, Roz, practical as ever, suggests I should knit two more booties...one big and one small, so then I'll have two pairs. Of course this makes perfect sense. But I don't want to do it, b/c I'm too demoralized by this huge discrepancy in what is a rather easy pattern. Good grief.

Bought some new reading material. The Knitter's Stash book has about 5 patterns I'm dying to knit and about 5 others that I would really like to knit, so I thought it was a good investment.

I'm usually not one to buy magazines full price, but I had to get this one b/c of one pattern:

Doggie Blanket! I have to make this one at some point for my sweet Ginnie Lee. The question is what to make it out of? It has to be washable if GL is going to use it, but I'm not sure I have the energy to knit something that big out of cotton (not the easiest to work with, you know). A washable wool, perhaps? Suggestions? I, of course, will have to modify one of the blocks to make sure it looks like a B & T Coonie.

My sister got her that bone for Xmas and she squeaked it and squeaked it and squeaked it for 7 months. Finally, the other night she killed the squeaker and then collapsed with it.

Maybe I can figure out how to open it up and replace the squeaker, then sew it back up again.

BTW, does anyone know how to get rid of some of the glare on these pics? Photography is not my thing...and the pics on everyone else's blogs look so much nicer than mine...

I have been meaning to take pics of my yarn and works in progress (WIPs), but haven't had enough time and quite frankly, it's been too bloody hot! It's hard to get motivated to do anything at all when it's so hot...and I like hot weather! But without central air and no good ventilation in my little carraige house, it can be a little miserable.

Today it's only 89 degrees rather than 98, which is what is was a couple days ago. But tonight I have a Beyond the Basics class at The Yarn Lounge, so I doubt I'll get many pics taken...but I'll try.

Meanwhile, I'll post a pic of the last finished objects (FO), which are a baby kimono from Mason Dixon Knitting and a pair of baby booties from online pattern which I modified slightly.

*I* am not having a baby. But there are eight (yes, eight) babies due to various co workers in the next several months, so I am on a baby knitting spree. The sweater and booties above might well have gone to the same recipient, seeing as they match and all...but because there is so much baby knitting to do, I broke up the set and gave them to two recipients.

They are both knit out of Rowan RY Yarns Cashsoft 4ply in Quartz. I used a total 2 balls for both projects and have a smidge leftover. That kimono knits in a flash and is super cute. The booties take about 2 hours each to knit and that includes me stopping and staring off into space occassionally.

Ginnie Lee is at day care again today so she'll get worn out enough to be able to be a good dog at the Yarn Lounge tonight during class. Hopefully, we'll capture it on camera.

A tired dog is a good dog

Ginnie Lee goes to doggie daycare a couple times a week. It is a lovely facility over in Church Hill where she just plays with other dogs to her hearts content.

Obviously, some dogs are bigger than she.

And some dogs are smaller than she.

But in the end...

There is a lot of yarn in my life right now. But I'm going to have to address the yarn later, b/c it's too much to talk about right now.

Hi, I'm Sangeeta

And this is my blog. I had an idea to have a blog about my two favorite topics: Knitting and dogs! As you can see above, I am holding a ball of yarn. You will see quite a bit of yarn on this blog. But there is something that you will see more.

This is Ginnie Lee:

She is my best friend and (mostly) faithful companion. Ginnie Lee is a Black and Tan Coonhound. She is a rescue. She had a somewhat rough time at first, but now she lives quite comfortably. Ginnie Lee is my most favorite subject of pictures, so you will see many pictures of her...probably more pictures of her than of my knitting.
